Vintage Heart

The cheap fluorescent light shines eerily bright
The aisles filled with people like me
I see you’re out shopping for friends tonight
With the art of superficial selection down to a tee
You head right over to the popular stock
But you won’t find me there
And you can look through the new and unused
But you’ll pick those racks bare
Without ever finding a trace of me
Because you’ve got no eye for reality
And because I’m no high thread count
You’ll never see the worth in me
And here I am once again
Thrown into the bargain bin
Stained with life
And a little bit torn
I’m turned inside out
Stretched with doubt
Missing a button
I’ve been carelessly worn
I’m smudged with experience
Colored with heartbreak
I’m close to having holes
And it’s more than I can take
You might laugh at my design
But I’m of fabric strong and true
I’m material indestructible
And I’m just trying to make it through
And I’ve been dirty a few times
Then a victim of bleached correction
Just to get dirty again
Like layers of imperfection
I see people scan me like a barcode
Guessing at my price
Like trying to get to know me
Would be a personal sacrifice
But I’m not second hand
I’m just a vintage heart
But you can’t appreciate my beauty
Unless you’d seen it from the start
Because now I wear it on the inside
And it doesn’t always show
You’d have to try me on
Before you’d ever really know
And the more I fade away
The more my worth shines through
But you’re all designer sophisticate
So you wouldn’t have a clue
And why settle for something real
When you could have artificial satisfaction
I guess I forgot about the way
You do everything for a reaction
So I watch you shop the night away
Smiling at the expensive selection
But if you’re ever looking for someone genuine
You can find me in the damaged section
